University of Michigan Ph.D. and M.S. Programs Engineering Education Prospective Student Open House

The Online Ethics Center, a pro We are excited to invite you to attend an open house to learn about the University of Michigan's graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). As you might know, EER is an emerging field in which scholars use methods from education and social sciences to study issues relevant in engineering education such as supporting faculty as they adopt more student-centered teaching approaches, using classroom technology to improve students' understanding of foundational engineering concepts, or comparing the approaches used by expert and novice designers as they solve engineering problems. 

 

The University of Michigan's EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model. Several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments, while EER graduate students are part of a college-wide program. This allows the EER faculty and their research to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. An EER graduate degree will provide students with career opportunities in academia, nonprofit organizations, and industry. We will be hosting an EER Prospective Student Open House on Friday, October 11, 2019, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in Ann Arbor, MI. Students from all institutions are invited to attend. Participants will hear all about the program, meet with faculty and graduate students, tour the beautiful University of Michigan campus and EER lab spaces, and learn about career opportunities as a UM graduate in this field. Students who attend the open house will be eligible for an application fee waiver.Note that applicants to the EER graduate program must have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a traditional engineering discipline.

Purdue University Engineering Education Graduate Program Open House

 

For more than a decade, Purdue's School of Engineering Education has attracted students passionate about studying how engineering is best taught, learned and practiced. A PhD in engineering education has opened doors for our alumni to a range of career opportunities, from academia to non-profit work to industry.

 

You are invited to attend our two-day graduate program open house on Thursday, October 24 (all day) and Friday, October 25, 2019 (morning). You will have opportunities to learn about our groundbreaking PhD program, meet our faculty and students, attend our weekly research seminar, and tour our campus and research facilities. This event brings together individuals from a variety of backgrounds: current undergrad and masters students from many disciplines, practicing STEM educators, and professional engineers ready for a career pivot.

Virginia Tech Engineering Education Ph.D. Program Open House

The Engineering Education Ph.D. graduate program at Virginia Tech prepares students for successful careers in research, academia, and industry by offering a program that is balanced between rigorous research and real-world application. 

 

We are hosting our 2019 Fall Open House for prospective Ph.D. students on October 31 and November 1.  Open House attendees will have the opportunity to learn about our program and the faculty and students who make up our close community.  The Open House will include current faculty research presentations, a poster session on current student research, and a seminar given by a leader in the engineering education field.  Attendees will have the chance to meet with faculty to discuss personal research interests and to participate in a relaxed discussion with our current graduate students. The events will begin at 3:00 pm on Thursday, October 31, 2019 and conclude at 5:00 pm on Friday, November 1st.  Visit bit.ly/VTENGEPhDOpenHouse for more information and to register.  A limited number of travel grants are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Training STEM Faculty New to Teaching Ethics Workshop

The Online Ethics Center, a project of the  Center for Engineering Ethics and Society (CEES) at the National Academy of Engineering, is currently accepting applications for 1½-day workshop in Washington, DC on Training STEM Faculty New to Teaching Ethics. Applications are invited from STEM faculty who wish to identify opportunities to integrate ethics and responsible conduct of research (RCR) guidance in their courses and research environments. Workshop presenters and participants will explore a variety of hands-on tools and approaches, both formal and ad hoc, including the use of the OEC as both a teaching tool and resource for materials. Participants will consider their own classes and research projects as well as the approaches and materials presented to create or enhance a learning activity, such as a class plan, course syllabus, or laboratory practice. This workshop is designed to help faculty and others seeking to fulfill (a) NSF and NIH requirements for providing RCR instruction and (b) ABET ethics education expectations.

The OEC is looking for faculty, researchers, and/or administrators who are eager to develop strategies and plans for incorporating ethics in their courses or research environments. Some spots will be reserved for individual attendees. Applicants are sought who will broadly represent a range of STEM disciplines, including the social sciences; graduate and undergraduate instructors; and a variety of academic institutions (e.g., liberal arts colleges, large public universities, institutions serving underrepresented populations, private research institutions).

The workshop will be held October 22–23, 2019, at the National Academies’ Keck Building in Washington, DC. There is no fee for workshop registration. Participants are expected to cover their travel costs. Limited funds are available for travel assistance in cases of financial need.

Journal of Engineering Education Mentored Reviewer Program

The Journal of Engineering Education (JEE) has a commitment to cultivate, disseminate, and archive scholarly research in engineering education.  To expand our reviewer base and maintain the quality of manuscript reviews, JEE is launching a new Mentored Reviewer Program in January 2019. This program is intended to coach new or novice reviewers through the review process with mentor who has substantial experience in reviewing and writing engineering education research studies. We are inviting applications for mentees to the JEE Mentored Reviewer Program. Mentees for the program should be novices in engineering education research such as graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and engineering faculty.  Mentees should display evidence of developing expertise (through formal courses or real-world experiences) in research areas that align with the journal’s mission.  Mentees should have developing expertise in either quantitative or qualitative research methods. Individuals from countries other than the United States are welcome and encouraged to apply.

 

The Mentored Reviewer Program is expected to be a competitive program for both mentors and mentees.  All mentors and mentees will be acknowledged at the ASEE annual meeting and will receive a certificate recognizing their accomplishments through their participation in the program during the previous year.  Mentees will be asked to participate in an online training with their mentors and JEE editors that will include an introduction to JEE and an overview of expectations for reviews.  During the mentorship period (approximately 6 months), mentors and mentees will be asked to work together on approximately three article reviews.  A scaffolded approach to the review process will be provided allowing the mentee to gain more independence by the final review.  To the extent possible, mentors and mentees will be matched based on expertise.
