Introduction

There are a number of funding opportunities available through the U.S. National Science Foundation to engineering education researchers.  You can find many potential opportunities in both ENG (Directorate of Engineering) and EDU (Directorate of STEM Education, formerly HRD), and other opportunities across the Foundation.

Inside ENG, the Division of Engineering Education and Centers (EEC) offers a number of funding opportunities through their "program clusters":

  • Engineering Education cluster (abbreviated "EngEd", or "EER" for "engineering education research") includes RFE NSF 24-1340RIEF NSF 20-558RED Track 1 NSF 24-564 and CAREER NSF 22-586, and offers resources associated with these programs on this page.
  • Broadening Participation cluster (forthcoming)
  • Workforce Development cluster (forthcoming).

Inside EDU, you can find webinars and office hours related to engineering education research and similar topics listed on their events page, and host a number of resource centers to support PIs, listed below.

NSF takes no responsibility for and exercises no control over the views expressed or the accuracy of the information contained on this site. Also be aware that NSF's privacy policy does not apply to this site. You can send corrections, broken links, or questions on any of these topics to the cluster mailbox at eer-programs@nsf.gov. Thank you!

Meet with an EER program officer

If you have an idea you think is fundable and you are looking for feedback on, or aren't sure where might be its home, please feel free to set up a short consultation with one of the EER program officers (select whomever fits your idea best, or fits your schedule best, from the drop-down menu). It is best if you send the program officer with whom you are meeting a short (~1 page) written summary of your idea in advance.

Current program officers associated with the NSF ENG/EEC-Engineering Education cluster:

EER Cluster office hours

Have a quick question about your developing proposal? Feel free to drop in to our regular office hours, hosted by Alice Pawley and Matthew Verleger.

Most Tuesdays, 3-4 pm ET.  Register for the link to any individual session here.

Volunteer to serve as a proposal reviewer for EER

It is our experience that the best way to learn how to write a competitive grant proposal is to serve as a proposal reviewer.  Reviewers may serve on panels (where they review a set of proposals related to a single funding opportunity, and come together in person or virtually to discuss it as a "panel), or as ad hoc reviewers (where they review one or two proposals, submit individual reviews, and do not serve on a panel).

To volunteer to review proposals for NSF, please register an account in research.gov, list keywords about your research expertise (including theoretical frameworks, methods, analytical approaches, types of research questions, experience with different broader impact initiatives, etc), and then email eer-programs@nsf.gov a copy of your CV.  Thank you!

NSF resources on engineering education research

Resources for prospective PIs

Proposal And Award Policies and Procedures

(PAPPG, pronounced "pap-gee"). This is the foundational document that governs policies associated with proposal development and project management.  Program officers reference this multiple times a day.  If you have a question about what goes in a proposal, or whether something is included or allowed, start by looking here.

NSF Merit Review Criteria

How will your proposal be reviewed?

  • Description website and PAPPG
  • Broader Impacts specifically: Website; "Perspectives on Broader Impact" (Report, 2022 - PDF)

Common Guidelines for Educational Research and Development

("Common guidelines").  This is a joint document put together by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. National Science Foundation.  This document defines the technical terms NSF uses to describe the focus of certain funding opportunities, including:

  • research developing core knowledge:
    • foundational research
    • early-stage or exploratory research
    • design and development research (which is different from design research)
  • impact research:
    • efficacy research
    • effectiveness research
    • scale-up research

"Dear Colleague Letters" (DCLs)

DCLs remain current until they are retired and taken off public website.  Some DCLs of particular interest to the EER community:

  • ENG:
    • Lemelson Initiative on Environmental and Social Sustainability in Engineering Education (NSF 24-028)Relates to RFE NSF 24-1340
    • STEM Access for Persons with Disabilities (STEM-APWD) - (NSF 23-160)
  • EDU:
    • Persons with Disabilities – STEM Engagement and Access (PWD-SEA) - (NSF 21-110)
  • Broad applicability:
    • Research Collaboration Opportunity in Europe for NSF Recipients NSF 24-053
    • Strengthening the Evidence Base Related to Broadening the Participation of LGBTQI+ Individuals in STEM (NSF 24-101
    • Fostering Harassment-Free STEM Education, Research, and Workplace Environments (NSF 23-140NEW 11/6/24

Funding opportunities of interest to this community outside of EEC you might have missed:

  • Workplace Equity for Persons with Disabilities in STEM and STEM Education (NSF 23-593)
